The Meals | Home Chef Review:

Meal 1: Pork Shumai Meatballs with Ponzu Dipping Sauce & Sap Peas

Pork Shumai Meatballs with Ponzu Dipping Sauce & Sap Peas from Home Chef

I have been making Asian food at home for as long as I’ve been cooking.

There were several years I made really bad Asian food, trying to perfect it, because there is definitely an art to it that has to be learned!

I will say that Home Chef’s chef who compiled this recipe definitely knows what they’re doing.  These Pork Meatballs were absolutely delicious.  The sugar snap peas were the best peas I have ever had.

My only regret is that the ponzu sauce was pre-made, so I don’t know what went into it (because I really want to re-create it!).

This meal was a home-run.  My whole family loved it!

Meal 2: Sherry Wine Demi-Glaze Sirloin Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Balsamic Brussels Sprouts

I also really loved this recipe! Of course, it is steak, potatoes and brussels, so it’s hard to go wrong here.

The brussels sprouts were probably my favorite and the instructions were easy to follow. The steak turned out great!  My only qualm with dish was the one medium-sized potato that was supposed to transform into mashed potatoes that served two people.

Maybe I am southern, but don’t you think that one serving of potato = one potato?  So, it really seemed like 2 potatoes should have been included.  There was also a surplus in milk and parmesan, and I added too much of it, which resulted in soupy potatoes.  #StillDeliciousThough

Meal 3: Southern Fried Pork Chops with mac’n’cheese and spicy green beans

I always appreciate anyone who encourages making mac’n’cheese from scratch, so this was a winner for me!  The mac’n’cheese featured salty cooked noodles, topped with cream and cheddar cheese.  It was creamy, indulgent, and so satisfying!

The pork chop was okay — which may have been my fault.  I didn’t get the oil hot enough before I added the pork chop, so it ended up a wee soggy.

Full disclosure – the green beans had a few moldy spots.  I discarded those and was able to salvage the rest of the bunch.

Overall, this meal was good, not great.

Meal 4: Skillet Chicken Chasseur with mushrooms and white wine

This was a veggie-packed meal that was unlike any I have ever cooked in my home before (and I’ve cooked a lot of meals!).

I appreciated Home Chef taking me out of my cooking comfort zone.

The ingredients are separated into plastic bags for each meal.  On the bottom were the meats, which were surrounded by ice packs to keep the meat cold.  All of the ingredients were still cold and at a safe temperature by the time I got off work, picked up the box off my front porch, and into my fridge.

I also appreciated the call-out to recycling!

Nice Touches | Home Chef Review:

Home Chef included a 3-ring binder to store recipes in.  This allows me to save my favorite recipes and try them again using ingredients from my local grocery store.

Would I try Home Chef again?

Yep!

My only complaint with this service is that it auto-renewed without any email notification (grated, it’s possible it went to spam) and I was sent the same meal on week 2 that I received on week 1.  Luckily, it was the pork meatballs, which I really enjoyed, but if it had been a recipe I thought was only okay, I would have been disappointed to pay $20 for it.

The take away is to order Home Chef, but be cognizant of the renewal date so you can ensure you get the meals you want to try!
