The Meals | Plated Review:
Meal 1: White Pizza with Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Balsamic Glaze
This was a great vegetarian option, and as an avid lover of brussels sprouts, it looked delicious! The Plated kit came with pre-made pizza dough, which was actually pretty great (better than my homemade pizza dough, I’ll admit). It came with a trio of cheeses: goat, Gruyère and mozzarella.
I really loved this dish, although it had too much goat cheese for my tastes. I also appreciated that my Plated kit came with parchment paper, which made clean-up easier. This is the kind of pizza topping combination that I would have never thought to make, but I will make again.
Meal 2: Beef Rendang with Lemongrass, Kaffir Lime, and Yellow Rice
I was really excited to try the Beef Rendang, especially since I would be cooking with some ingredients I haven’t ever cooked with before: lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves. This dish had some great flavors that worked well together, but the sauce didn’t reduce as much as I anticipated (and like the picture showed). I also found the steak to be low quality and too thick to cook to medium doneness on the stove-top, and some of my green beans had molded. This was my family’s least favorite meal in our Plated box.
Meal 3: Beef and Cheese Empanadas with Salsa Roja
Admission – I have another blog that is dedicated to New Mexican food recipes, and I have never made empanadas before this! These turned out great, and were a favorite for my whole family. The spinach adds another flavor and extra nutrition to the filling, and the warm salsa on top was a great touch.
Meal 4: Brown Butter Orecchiette with Spicy Sausage and Peas
This was probably the easiest of the four meals to prepare and one of our favorites. It has a pairing of spicy sausage with a sage and brown butter sauce, peas and Parmesan. I have made brown butter sauce before and found that the instructions that Plated created were easier to follow and produced fewer dishes. This was simple and filling.
Shipping and Packaging | Plated Review: 4.5 out of 5
The ingredients are separated into plastic bags for each meal. All of the produce, seasonings and extras were on the top level. Below those were the meats, which were surrounded by ice packs to keep the meat cold. All of the ingredients were still cold and at a safe temperature by the time I got off work, picked up the box off my front porch, and into my fridge.
Nice Touches | Plated Review:
There was a sticker adhered to the top of the box that shows it was shipped from Union City, California. It also lists where all of the produce comes from, which I think is pretty cool!
Would I try Plated again?
Yes, I will try them again. Would I subscribe to Plated every week? No, probably not.
I found the Plated recipes had a lot of fun ingredients that I wouldn’t normally cook with, so I appreciated the opportunity to get outside my cooking comfort zone. However, I found the meat to be low quality and two of my produce items were molded or about to be. While I appreciated that the ingredients were all minimally processed and on the healthier-side, I feel the ingredients were not up to the same standards as my local grocery store.
